Do Planes Have Reverse Gears Also? Finding an Answer

If you want to take a car, bus, or truck backwards, then it can be easily done with the help of a reverse gear. If the same is to be done with an aeroplane, then does it also have a reverse gear?  Auto companies provide reverse gear in vehicles so that the vehicle can be driven backwards if needed.

In such a situation, reverse gear is very useful. If this weren’t the case, then the vehicle would have to be pushed backwards manually.  It is common to see reverse gear in cars, buses, trucks, and other vehicles. We have talked about vehicles on the road, but do aeroplanes also have reverse gear or not?

If the plane is to be taken backwards, then how will pilots do it? The plane is very large. Is it not possible to take it backwards by pushing? Do the companies that make planes provide a reverse gear? In this blog, we will try to find an answer to this question.

Getting to the Direct Answer

The direct answer to the question of whether a plane has a reverse gear is 'no'. A plane does not have a reverse gear. Cars have a reverse gear because they can also be driven in reverse. But a plane does not need to be driven backwards. A plane only needs to be driven forward. If a plane needs to go back, it will have to turn around.

How is a Plane Taken in Reverse?

To drive a plane backwards, the pilots turn the gases coming out of the engines in the opposite direction. This process is called reverse thrust. Reverse thrust is used to stop the plane on the runway. A tug truck is used to pull the plane from the runway. The plane is also taken backwards by a tug truck.

Another style of thrust reversers, often seen on airliners, is the pivot-door style. These systems consist of several doors on the sides of the engine nacelle. When they open, the air from the main turbofan is diverted from its regular path through the nacelle. Instead, it travels forward, resulting in a rearward drag on the plane.

Pilots primarily use thrust reverser systems to slow down the aircraft during landing. Even though it is still in the forward motion on the runway, applying reverse power slows it down quickly. This means the plane will use less runway.

The most important advantage of thrust reversers is that they reduce the pilot's dependence on the brakes. Brakes can only be used a few times because they are consumable parts, just like tires on a car. The more you use the brakes, the more often they will need to be replaced.

The thrust reversers are part of the engine and arranging them is a free braking system. With lift spoilers on the wings, thrust reversers, brakes, and lift spoilers, a plane travelling at 150 mph or more can be stopped at a short distance.

Understanding Reverse Thrust Pushback

On some aircraft, it's possible to gently turn the plane backwards a short distance on the ground. However, this happens very rarely. At most airports in India and around the world, the ramp area is crowded with baggage and service carts, as well as numerous employees. Jet blast is powerful and it can fling people or vehicles hundreds of feet away, causing serious harm to both.

FOD (foreign object debris) impairment to the plane or engine is also an issue. When the turbine spins, it pulls in huge amounts of air, creating a powerful suction that can engulf cars, luggage, and anything else within reach. Once in the engine, even small objects can cause serious and costly damage. That's why only a few airports allow the pilot to perform reverse thrust pushback or power back.

Working of Reverse Thrust on a Turboprop?

These are jet engines attached to propellers. This type of powerplant is very common in large aeroplanes designed for short or medium-range operations.

Since these planes get thrust from the same propellers as piston-powered aeroplanes, thrust reversers don't work. However, they still have a system that produces the same effect.

High-performance aeroplanes like these have adjustable-pitch propellers. Most small planes have propellers that can change pitch, allowing them to be optimized for different flight profiles.

However, some aeroplanes take it one step further and have propellers that can reverse their pitch. The result is reverse thrust, which can move the plane backwards on the tarmac or help slow it down on the runway.

While most propeller pitch functions are controlled by moving the blue propeller lever in the cockpit, reverse thrust, or "beta mode," is achieved by moving the throttle back. This is only used during ground operations.

How does an Aeroplane Fly?

To fly a plane, the pilots turn on the engine. The gases coming out of the engine, which rotate the turbines, drive the propellers or jet engines. The air coming out of the propellers or jet engines pushes the plane forward. This is called thrust.

Thrust and lift are necessary to fly a plane. The wings of the plane are used to lift it. The shape and inclination of the wings of the plane are such that when the air moves across the wings, an upward force is generated on the wings.

The force will lift the plane into the sky when it becomes more powerful than the force of gravity, which pulls the plane towards the ground. Lift works to lift the plane. In this way, the plane moves forward and takes to the air.

Summing Up the Scene

A pilot should know all about the functionality of an aeroplane. If you also want to become a pilot, consider enrolling in a flight training school like Flapone Aviation. We are one of the finest aviation training schools in India and this is because the quality of training we render to the aspiring pilots and the cost we charge for the same.
