Evolution of Drone Design: From Toys to Industrial Tools

As drones become smaller and more maneuverable, law enforcement agencies are increasingly using them for enhanced safety and efficiency in their operations. From consumer models, such as the DJI Phantom’s GPS with GoPro action camera functionality, to enterprise-grade drones tailored precisely for police and first responders, law enforcement drones have been quickly accepted by all government agencies for law enforcement purposes. Civilian drones are significantly more economical compared to helicopter rentals for aerial photography and video production. Drone cameras have electronic speed controllers that manage motor speed and direction to stabilizing gimbals, mitigating vibration and wind for sharp images. Some autonomous drones can avoid obstacles. Others boast cutting-edge features, including AI that allows them to follow subjects while recording video with audio commentary, or even provide AR capabilities that overlay virtual objects onto the live feed from the drone. Drones are an indispensable military asset. While drones cannot replace human observation, their unique perspective lets commanders gain fresh perspectives and identify areas for improvement easily than before. Also, drones can gather intelligence about enemy locations. Military drones can carry out lethal strikes against targets, yet critics assert they violate international laws on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary killing. Civilian drones have become predominant for leisure use, including capturing aerial photos. Drones can also be used to record videos, audiovisual productions or virtual real estate tours. As stated by FAA regulations and any specific rules of any local airfield or controlled airspace they are flying over, including keeping within visual range of their pilot at all times, while not flying above 500 feet.

Landing of an aeroplane is equally important as its takeoff and mid-air operation and it becomes even more sensitive at night. Normally, almost all the runways have special lighting systems providing the pilot with an idea of direction, distance and altitude. But have you ever wondered what would happen if a plane had to land on a runway without any runway lights? Is landing even possible in this case? In this blog, we will have our focus on a situation where a plane has to land on a runway without a pilot at night without runway lights. We will explore the significance of runway lights, the challenges of landing without them and the rare instances where a plane has successfully landed without runway lights, both in India as well as around the world.

If I tell you that, before, pilots did sleep in the cockpit, and it is safer rather than riskier for pilots as well as passengers, it might bring shivers down your spine. A pilot sleeping mid-flight is both legal and crucial. Fatigue is widely recognized as a substantial risk to flight safety, and more crashes result from fatigue than from pilots falling asleep. Most countries use several fatigue mitigation techniques for pilots, ranging from minimum rest requirements to medical countermeasures. The efficacy of these methods can be questioned, however, when considering the results of several studies that show 56% to 75% of commercial pilots have admitted to falling asleep in-flight.

When Do the Wheels of an Aeroplane Open and Close?
Pilot Training Pilot Qualification

When Do the Wheels of an Aeroplane Open and Close?

The landing gear of an aircraft is an essential component. It helps the plane to land on the runway and take off. A pilot needs to know when to open and close the wheels of the plane. This process is followed for technical reasons and also to ensure safety, efficiency and aerodynamic performance of an aircraft. The wheels of an aircraft are in contact with the runway during takeoff and landing.   The Landing gear usually consists of three or more wheels, shock absorbers, a brake system and a hydraulic or electro-mechanical retraction system. In larger aircraft, these wheels are recessed into the fuselage after takeoff to decrease aerodynamic drag and save fuel. This blog will help you learn about the details of how the process of opening and closing the wheels of an aircraft works and how aviation academies assist pilots in learning it.

Do Planes Have Reverse Gears Also? Finding an Answer

If you want to take a car, bus, or truck backwards, then it can be easily done with the help of a reverse gear. If the same is to be done with an aeroplane, then does it also have a reverse gear?   Auto companies provide reverse gear in vehicles so that the vehicle can be driven backwards if needed. In such a situation, reverse gear is very useful. If this weren’t the case, then the vehicle would have to be pushed backwards manually.   It is common to see reverse gear in cars, buses, trucks, and other vehicles. We have talked about vehicles on the road, but do aeroplanes also have reverse gear or not? If the plane is to be taken backwards, then how will pilots do it? The plane is very large. Is it not possible to take it backwards by pushing? Do the companies that make planes provide a reverse gear? In this blog, we will try to find an answer to this question.

Are Fatal Aviation Accidents That Common? Let's Find Out

Travelling in an aeroplane and piloting it are both thrilling experiences for the folks, to say the least. This thrill can sometimes turn into unfortunate, catastrophic events. This is when an aircraft meets with an accident or crash. This leads to the loss of lives and property, and also instils a sense of fear in people's minds regarding the safety of travelling in an aeroplane. To answer this, we can easily say that boarding an aircraft for travel is safe. It is just like when you step into your car and hop onto a bike to go from one place to another, the last thing you think about is that an accident can take place. However, sometimes this unfortunate thing does happen and can even result in loss of life. Do people not get on the road again on their two and four-wheelers or even in public convenience? It is not just about road accidents, but accidents also occur in all modes of transport, including railways and waterways. But air accidents or crashes are indeed more deadly than any other type of accident. Statistically, there are more chances to be struck by lightning or be a victim of a shark attack than you are to perish in a plane crash. Every effort is made to minimize the occurrence of these events, and if one does occur, appropriate relief measures are implemented. Aviation authorities and passengers alike must be aware of the various reasons behind these accidents and crashes. Since the 1980s, there has been a sharp reduction in the number of fatal aviation accidents. Although the number of accidents is decreasing, a fear of flying persists. This is primarily due to the size and scope of such accidents. Common Causes of Aviation Accidents

What Happens When Aircraft Engines Fail Mid-Air?
Aviation Training Aircraft Pilot

What Happens When Aircraft Engines Fail Mid-Air?

Most multi-engine aircraft have engines underhung from the wings. The engines are placed at a distance from the aircraft's Centre of Gravity. This distance is recognized as arm length. The thrust produced by the engines acts through the CG, which acts like the pivot of a seesaw. In usual conditions, both engines produce the same thrust. Though when an engine fails, there is a thrust disparity as the dead engine no longer produces any thrust, while the functioning engine continues to do so. The moment generated by the live engine swerves the aircraft on the way to the inoperative engine. This yaw requires that the aircraft be arrested to guarantee that the aircraft does not enter a spiralling dive. To counter the unwanted yaw from the functioning engine, a force needs to be produced in the yaw axis. This comes from the tail or the vertical stabilizer. The pilots can differentiate the force created by the tail using the rudder attached to it. So, in the event of an engine failure, the pilots use their feet and press on the rudder pedal to deflect the rudder until the yaw is controlled. If the engine on the right side fails, the left rudder is applied; if it is on the left, the right rudder should be applied. In a twin-engine aircraft, the failure of an engine results in a 50% decrease in total thrust. Regarding performance, an engine failure results in a loss of approximately 70% of performance. This is because an engine failure results in drag due to control surface deflection and sideslip.

ATPL Frozen vs ATPL Unfrozen – What It Means in Career Terms in India?
Airline Pilot Airline Captain

ATPL Frozen vs ATPL Unfrozen – What It Means in Career Terms in India?

Generally, there are four types of pilot licenses. Holding a Private Pilot License (PPL)   allows one to operate a light aircraft and carry passengers, provided the aircraft is not hired or used for commercial purposes. A CPL allows the license holder to fly for hire or compensation. To become a captain of a large multi-crew aircraft, an ATPL is required. Along with training, a pilot needs at least 1500 hours of flight time to get an Airline Pilot License or an ATPL. Therefore, CPL is the highest license available upon completing flight training. There is a substitute for a CPL. The Multi-Pilot License (MPL) is a restricted license allowing the holder to work as a co-pilot on a multi-crew aircraft only. The theory is the same as the ATPL. To get any of these licenses, a pilot should undergo theoretical and practical training. A pilot without 1,500 hours of flight time can also complete ATPL theory and exams. To work as a co-pilot on large multi-pilot aircraft, one should have a CPL and have passed the ATPL theory exams. Therefore, it is normal to complete ATPL theory training and exams as part of a CPL course.

India’s No-Fly Zones for Drones: What You Need to Know

With their growing popularity and increasing number, drones are transforming India's agriculture , transportation , surveillance , and photography . However, operating them is governed by the rules set by the DGCA, the regulatory authority of drone and aviation operations in India. Every drone must be registered on the Digital Sky platform for a unique identification number (UIN). This number gives a drone a unique identity, and with the help of this number, the owner can be easily traced if need be. India’s airspace is divided into red, yellow, and green zones. • Red Zones are no-fly areas, such as those within 5 km of airports, where flying is only permissible with central government approval. • Yellow Zones cover areas 8-12 km from airports, where flights up to 200 feet need permission from local Air Traffic Control authorities. • Green Zones , drones can fly up to 400 feet without prior approval but must follow safety guidelines. Moreover, increasing instances of drone flights in crowded areas lead to safety concerns. Under DGCA guidelines, flying drones in congested areas, whether for taking photos, videos, or any other purpose, is not allowed, as it poses privacy and public safety risks. Operators should always follow these regulations to ensure that drone use is safe and compliant with national rules.

Can I Fly a Drone Without a License in India?

India wants to become a global drone hub by 2030. To this end, the Government of India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation published new rules in 2021. Further amendments were made in 2022. These included drone rule amendments and some changes to the Unmanned Aircraft System Rules published in 2021. Agriculture is a major sector across India, and the Finance Ministry stated the need to introduce the Drone-as-a-service model. This will impact India’s agricultural practices. It comprises using drones to digitize land records, monitor and assess the health of the crops, and spray pesticides and nutrients. Various drone training institutes, courses, and programs are being established to increase the number of skilled personnel in the industry who can use drones in agriculture and also other industries. Registration and Licensing  All drones in India should be registered with the DGCA, and all drone operators should possess a licence to fly them. Registrations will be done on the DGCA’s Digital Sky platform, a single-window online platform for drone registrations and approvals. Requirements for People Becoming Drone Operators ·     The minimum age required for flying a drone commercially is 18 years. As far as educational eligibility is concerned, they should have passed 10th, apart from having completed a mandatory drone training course from a DGCA-approved institution and passed the written exam.   ·     Upon passing the exam, the operator will have a remote pilot certificate or an RPC from the DGCA via the Digital Sky Platform in 15 days. The RPC is valid for 10 years. ·     However, a certificate is unnecessary to operate nano drones less than 250 grams and non-commercial micro drones below 2 kg. But even if permissions are not required, operators cannot fly nano or micro drones over 50 feet or above a speed of 25 metres/second. Restrictions on Drone Use DGCA has imposed some restrictions on drone operators regarding the flying of drones. For example, operators cannot fly near airports or in thickly populated areas. MoCA has also positioned an interactive airspace map on the Digital Sky platform for the suitability of drone operators. This map is colour-coded into green, yellow, and red zones. Green Zones : No permission is essential for flying drones in these areas. Yellow Zones: These are controlled airspaces, and operators must have special permission to enter them. Red Zones : These are strictly no-fly zones, such as nuclear power plants, military bases and other sensitive areas restricted because of the risk of accidents or security purposes. Availing permission is compulsory before operating a drone. Drone operators can apply for permission through the Digital Sky app, which grants or rejects the request. The drones allowed for use in India must be inept at taking off without permission. One must comply with all these restrictions while flying a drone, or there can be a penalty of up to ₹1,00,000. Coming to a Conclusion If you also have a question in your head, "Can I fly a drone?" If you tick all the boxes, then you can definitely fly a drone. We at Flapone Aviation, a leading drone pilot school will allow you to fly drones for commercial purposes by providing top-notch training, as we have the best instructors on board.

They can also offer data, showing producers where the fields have poor drainage areas. By knowing precisely what’s going on in the field and where it is happening, producers can identify trouble spots where they need to focus their time and resources. Pest Control  Drones can be used in precision agriculture for the application of pesticides. Farmers use sprayers to apply chemicals, or, depending on conditions and plant height, they may hire a crop duster aeroplane to dispense the pesticide or herbicide. By using programs to analyze crop health to pinpoint areas of sickened crops or infestation, producers using drones can apply products only to those areas that need them. Delivering Nutrients Using the same approach, producers can use drones to apply fertilizer in a specific manner that provides nutrients to the plants that require them and doesn’t waste them on the plants that don't require any extra nourishment. Precise fertilizer application using drones is another way for producers to limit the cost of inputs while protecting the health of crops and land. An Eye in The Sky Drones with cameras can help farmers get their eyes on crops quickly to assess damage. Farmers with cattle also use drones to check on their cattle herd or review fences for damage. Using a drone can save time since it can quickly zoom over fields faster than a person. Advantages of Using Drones in Agriculture The advantages of using a drone in agriculture are the ability to collect data quickly, ease of usage, and lower operational costs. Producers can rapidly zero in on smaller problem areas, take steps to correct any glitches, and then move on to the next field without tractors, sprayers, or other equipment. Drones are also tremendously precise. Because they propel in the air, they do not damage the plants or disturb the soil. Summing Up the Scene Because of the increasing use of drones in agriculture, endless opportunities are manifesting themselves in the job market for drone pilots . If a career as a drone pilot interests you, then we at Flapone Aviation, a drone school in Delhi , will help you enter the field and do well.

Aviation Training Can Boost the Prospects for Urban Air Mobility

Urban air mobility is becoming the go-to mode of urban transport. This will replace traditional modes of transport because of their advantages. Almost all major metros have traffic congestion, environmental pollution, etc., which can be dealt with by urban air mobility. The number of smart cities is growing in the country. The main views of ‘smart cities’ are smart architecture, a pollution-free environment, hassle-free communication facilities, and easy mobility modes. Since India is the most populous country in the world, keeping up with these objectives and the pace of urbanization is a tough job. Managing urban transport traffic is one such challenge. If urban air mobility has spanned its wings, then there is also a need for good and reliable aviation training  to make aviation enthusiasts knowledgeable and trained, whether they fly full-fledged aeroplanes or air taxis. What is Urban Air Mobility? To tackle vehicular congestion in urban areas, urban air mobility has been developed. This involves the use of an efficient aviation transportation system and cutting-edge aircraft to transport passengers or cargo within an urban or suburban area. These aircraft fly at lower altitudes than normal aeroplanes and also cover short distances. Advantages of Urban Air Mobility The future of urban air mobility is bright as it will reduce traffic on the roads, especially in the cities and the suburbs. Almost all metros face the problem of commuting. Air taxis can help in solving the problem of congestion, therefore reducing the travel time in megacities and increasing the productivity of the people. This also helps reduce carbon emissions in urban areas. In the years to come, air taxis will replace normal vehicles and reduce emissions. Most developing and developed nations have vowed to reduce their carbon emissions and attain net zero emissions in the next 40-50 years. Urban air mobility is, hence, important to achieving this fate. Electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles, which are the basic units of the urban air transport system, take off, off, and land just like helicopters, and hence don’t need long runways or large spaces for take-off and landing. Also, these vehicles don’t require any special roads, tracks, or e-charging stations for travelling; only helipads need to be made wherein these air taxis can be parked and charged. All these features will help free up urban space while simultaneously helping to fully use unused resources. Reduction in environmental pollution, improvement in people's health, increase in overall productivity, and improvement in the living standard of the general public are some of the potential outcomes of urban air mobility.
